I work on Edge AI for medical devices. I have helped build and test early detection and monitoring systems for Cancer, Parkinson's, and MS.I also work on side projects like an ML-aware 2D physics engine that does FP64-level math in Vulkan shaders, I have written a ton of MPS kernels for PyTorch, and I am working on a high-quality TTS engine that can be used locally on iPhone and Android.If I am on and not talking, I am probably dealing with something listed above, and these hobbies limit the time I can play.I have a BS in ECE from OSU, I built an LLM in 2017-18, I helped build both Summit and Frontier at ORNL, and I was on ORNL's COVID research team during the outbreak.For my non-research/ML work, I was a Linux kernel maintainer for the Bluetooth/BLE/WiFi subsystem. I helped figure out why chips weren't waking up from the sleep state for my first issue, and later helped architect the mass overhaul of Realtek drivers that came out in the 6.x release.If you have read this far, I am going to say this: If there is something you're putting off learning, or something you want to do but don't know how, just start doing it today, right now. If you want to start building your own game, download something like Godot and follow a tutorial on YouTube. If you want to do ML, sign up on Hugging Face and/or Kaggle and do the tutorials. The things we do are a mix of optimism, wants, and the ability to learn. Everything starts with a base of knowledge and then each brick that is laid expands that understanding more. We all fail, but it's important to get back up and try again.
