“They called it a reclamation settlement. The Amarrians always had proper names for places like that.

Settlement 28 sat half-buried in the Derelik dust under banners so old the gold had faded brown. Children learned quickly there. Keep your head down. Work when told. Do not speak during sermons.

He was born there. Small for a Brutor boy. Quiet. Watched everything.

One night a guard turned up dead beside the outer gate. Throat opened clean. No alarm. No witnesses. Just one missing child and tracks leading into the dunes.

Weeks later, Republic raiders destroyed the settlement. Freed whoever was still alive.

They never found him.

Years afterward, the name started appearing in places it shouldn’t have. Dock registries. Militia after-action reports. Sleeper recovery logs. Always brief. Always incomplete.

Monomachus.

No tribe formally claims him. No military service record survives intact. Some say he fought with Republic irregulars during the Elder War. Others claim he bought his capsule license with blood money and vanished into null before anyone could ask questions.

What is known is this:

He tends to appear near disasters.

Seyllin.
The wormhole collapses.
Triglavian breach zones.
Dead mining colonies.
Drifter incidents.

Never at the center. Usually afterward.

Sometimes there are survivors.

Sometimes there aren’t.

DED records referencing him were sealed or removed years ago. The remaining fragments repeatedly identify the same pattern:

Independent operator.
Industrial-capable.
Combat capable.
Extreme-risk tolerance.
Long-duration deployment history.
Minimal corporate affiliation.

One report described him as:
‘A salvage pilot with warship habits.’

That may be the most accurate thing written about him.”
