The second day of the Alliance Tournament XXII preliminaries took place on Sunday, August 30, 2026, on the Thunderdome server. Alongside the continuation of the matches, the tournament has drawn significant attention due to the implementation of the new Swiss system format, designed to make preliminary stages fairer, more dynamic, and highly competitive for all 58 participating teams.
Understanding the Swiss System Format
The Swiss-system tournament format is a non-elimination competitive structure featuring multiple rounds of competition. Instead of knocking teams out immediately or relying on a traditional round-robin group stage, the Swiss system works as follows:
Equal Record Matchmaking: In each round after the first, teams are paired against opponents who share the exact same win-loss record (e.g., 1-0 teams play against other 1-0 teams, 0-1 teams play 0-1 teams, and so on).
No Early Elimination: Teams compete across a set number of preliminary rounds (seven matches per team over three weekends), ensuring everyone gets substantial play time without being instantly eliminated after a single bad match.
Climbing the Ladder: Successful teams accumulate wins to climb toward the top brackets, eventually narrowing down the field to the top 16 teams that advance to the final knockout stages on October 31 and November 1.
