Description
We monitor many frequencies. We listen always. Came a voice, out of the babel of tongues, speaking to us.
While investigating a ruined starbase deep in deadspace in the Utopia system, an Emergent Technologies expedition party found itself under attack by an unidentified vessel, seemingly of Sleeper origin. They were barely able to defeat the attacker, their ships suffering heavy damage in the process. While salvaging the debris, the remnants of the vessel's AI launched a final, last-ditch digitized viral assault.
The explorers, already in distress from the space battle, succumbed quickly to the assault. First their ship control systems were compromised, and soon the firewalls shielding their capsules were overwhelmed as well. As the viral code embedded itself in the heavily-augmented bodies of the EMTEK capsuleers, their individual identities were replaced with linked instances of the Drifter AI.
The expeditionary party now functions as a single entity, known only as Somnum.
