Here's something you can do if you didn't already:

First, make yourself familiar with the skill system. Train the learning
skills to level 3. For more info see:

("How to train attributes" is the most important point, though you
probably won't need to train to level 4 at the beginning).

Have a look at the GrismarNetWiki:

It has nice tips for almost everything important in EVE. Use it to
learn to set InstaJumps!

Use the EVE explorer:
http://grismar.net/eve/explorer/index.php
It tells you where you can find suitable deadspace complexes,
agents, and so on. Its much more versatile than the in-game map.
